The Korean perm, explained

A Korean perm is not one treatment. It is a look — soft texture through the fringe, volume on top, sides that stay flat — and Singapore salons get there using a cold perm, a digital perm, or a perm combined with a down perm. Which one you need depends on your hair, not on the name.

What people usually mean by it

Almost everyone asking for a Korean perm is describing one of a small set of results:

• Comma hair — a fringe that curves inwards towards the face, the shape that gives the style its name
• Soft volume through the top, without the hair looking curled
• Movement that looks unstyled even though it is not
• Sides that sit flat against the head, so the volume on top reads as deliberate

Which treatment actually produces it

For most men with short hair, the cold perm is the right call — it holds shape better at short lengths and it is the perm we prefer for gentlemen. The digital perm becomes the better option once there is enough length for the curl to fall rather than spring.

The part most people miss: the sides

The Korean silhouette depends on contrast — volume on top set against sides that lie flat. Thick Asian hair does the opposite by default: it flares outwards a fortnight after a cut, which flattens the contrast and makes the whole thing read as generic volume.

So for a good number of men, the down perm contributes more to the finished look than the perm itself does. It is also the cheaper half of the equation, which is worth knowing before you book.

What to bring to the consultation

Two or three photos, including one from the side. Front-facing photos hide the thing that matters most, which is how much volume sits above the ear. A side view settles in five seconds what five minutes of description will not.

An honest answer about styling. A perm reduces the work but does not remove it — most of these looks still want thirty seconds of product and a rough dry. If you will not do that, say so, and the shape should be chosen differently.

Enough length. A fringe needs to reach roughly the eyebrow before a comma curve is possible. If yours is shorter, the useful appointment today is a cut that grows into it.

What it costs at MANE

A perm is nearly always done with a cut in the same appointment, since the shape has to be set before the texture is. Allow two hours for a cold perm and three to four for a digital perm.

Upkeep

A cold perm holds for around two to three months, a digital perm three to four. Both grow out softly rather than leaving a hard line, which is one of the quiet advantages over a colour service — there is no point at which it suddenly looks like it needs redoing.

Do not wash it for the first 48 hours. After that, a matte paste or a light sea-salt spray on damp hair is usually all it takes; heavy waxes weigh the curl down and undo the volume you paid for.
